The internal crisis communication accelerator will give you the competence, confidence and credibility to lead internal communication through a crisis.
This advanced, two-and-a-half-day immersive training programme is designed for in-house internal communication leaders and HR professionals who need to prepare for, respond to and recover from complex crises in their own organisation with greater skill, strategic judgement and influence. The Accelerator combines three essential elements:
Two days of advanced learning
Build your knowledge, judgement and capability through specialist teaching, realistic scenarios, case studies, exercises and discussion.
Time to work on your own plans
Apply the learning to your own organisation, with opportunities to test your thinking and receive expert feedback as you work.
A half-day of one-to-one mentoring
Explore the issues that matter most to you as you define your priorities and next steps.
Led by founding director Alison Arnot, a specialist in internal crisis communication and author of Internal Communication in Times of Crisis: How to secure employee trust, support and advocacy in crisis situations, the Accelerator brings together specialist expertise, academic insight and practical frameworks with real-world discussion, application and feedback.
Develop the capability to lead internal communication through a crisis
Judgement
Assess complex situations, weigh competing priorities and make sound strategic communication decisions when information is incomplete and time is limited.
Influence
Build alignment with senior stakeholders, ensuring internal communication considerations are understood and integrated into the wider crisis response.
Leadership
Set direction and lead the internal communication response through chaos and uncertainty to resolution and recovery.
Day one: Understand, anticipate and prepare
We will explore and practise:
- The types of crises your organisation might face, and the challenges they create
- How employees experience crises, and what that means for internal communication
- The role of leadership, communication and culture in crisis prevention and recovery
- The core principles and theories that underpin effective internal crisis communication
- How to use Alison’s 7S Framework to meet evolving human and organisational needs
- How to identify, understand and track warning signs in your own organisation
- What to include in your own internal crisis communication policy and plan
The day includes opportunities for group discussion, practical tasks, and reflective exercises to apply the learning to your own organisation.
Day two: Communicate, lead and adapt
We will explore and practise:
- How to set objectives that meet human and organisational needs
- What to consider when advising on crisis communication style and strategy
- How to advise on timing, content, spokespeople and channels
- How to craft and test messages that help, rather than hinder, the crisis response
- How to involve employees in finding solutions and sharing success
- How to anticipate emerging need and adapt internal communication accordingly
- How to respond to leaks, rumours and information gaps
- How to help leaders see the consequences of different choices
- How to take care of yourself and your team
- How to evaluate communication impact, capture learning and share lessons learned
As with day one, day two includes opportunities for group discussion, practical tasks, and space to apply the learning to your own organisation.
Day three: Half day one-to-one coaching
The final half-day is a dedicated one-to-one session with Alison. You decide the area of focus, and can use the session to explore the issues and priorities that matter most to you, test your thinking and work through current challenges and agree practical next steps.
